Viridhya: offering eco-friendly shopping bags made by women overcoming distress

We have started a new project in 2014 to empower women in India and introduce our beautifully designed, eco-friendly bags as an alternative to plastic bags which are extremely toxic to our environment.

The bags are skillfully stitched by hand and made of natural plant fibers. They are affordable, long lasting, light in weight, sturdy, and easy to fold away for storage in a handbag or rucksack. By (buying) ordering these shopping bags you will join a collaborative effort that has a two-fold mission:

  • To help impoverished Indian women take an important step toward independence through a caring micro-enterprise initiative, and
  • To promote worldwide environmental conservation.

These women are taking a big step towards independence, since they can earn an income while working from home, shelter or a workplace of their choosing and also look after the house and children. This kind of empowerment is very practical, because it combines their life, as a mother, a housewife and a working woman. The women are first sent to school where they are taught to make the bags according to the specifications. Only when their designated teacher has approved their work, can they start making them.

With this project we have taken a small step towards empowering women, especially women in distress who are living in shelters, often with their children.

The proverb “If you give a man a fish to eat he will have one meal, but teach him how to fish and he will have an income for rest of his life” rings especially true with this project.

We are also taking a step towards helping our environment recover from the damage caused by plastic bags. Will you join us in our venture by buying our bags and helping women in distress and our environment? We encourage you to purchase one or more of these bags and spread the word to your family and friends – not just because they are wonderful bags (which they are) – but also because it is simply a responsible thing to do!

We are not asking for donations. We are asking you to help us help them make a living. We believe that the ability to work is of greater benefit than a one-off handout. Your purchase will help them to earn a much-needed income to improve their lives and safeguard our environment at the same time.
